As Public Defender of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, I am seeking your support for my reelection. I have an announced opponent. I am often asked...why would people care about the Public Defender's Office? They only represent working and poor people. The response is that this office protects and defends the Constitution daily - not only just for poor people but for ALL people. Since I took office, we have diligently represented the Constitution in many ways; a few examples: 1. We vigorously defended a client charged ih the vicious murder/rape of a 10 year old child in which the State Attorney was seeking death. Based on the defense investigation, the State dropped the charges a week before trial and is now actively pursuing the real offenders. 2.We obtained the first defense search warrant in the nation, which proved the innocence of a client facing multiple life sentences. 3. We created a Mental Health Division that received multiple awards and successfully served, since the beginning of my administration, almost 1,000 clients, allowing these clients to secure normal, productive lives. 4. We greatly enhanced services to juvenile offenders with an emphasis on prevention of further involvement in the criminal justice system, and this office is now recognized statewide as a groundbreaking force in these efforts. I hope you will assist me in continuing my goal of making this office among the best in the nation to ensure justice for all, and I solicit your support, at the polls and if possible financially.
